If you want to upgrade an old socket 939...

Performs better than an OCd FX55 when applications can make use of 2 cores. About the same TDP as FX55 so it needs a good heat sink. Stock AMD (Foxconn) 2ZR71 heat pipe heat sinks work. So do Thermalright XP-90s.

  • For the right price, a good way to extend the life of your older computer

If you currently have a single core chip, this is a great upgrade. If you have a dual core and are just moving from say a 2.0 clock speed to a 2.4 clock speed, not such a big improvement, even with the associated increase in cache that this chip offers. This is the top end chip for the 939 socket. Installing this chip in place of a single core chip will take you from a machine that is slow to a machine that is acceptable or maybe even fast. Other things you can do to speed up your machine -- install WWindows 7 and install a SSD (Solid State Drive.) Windows 7, 64 bit may allow your system to recognize additional memory that it could not recognize with XP. Some mother boards that use the 939 chip will accept 4 Mb of memory. Summary -- at some point you just have to buy a new machine, ...

  • Dual core VS Single core

OK, This review is for a Socket 939 motherboard. I have one and as most of "us" I was Devastated when AMD discontinued the 939 series. I started with a 3700+ Single core processor. It was fast enough but I noticed a downfall in multitasking. When I was doing a virus or Malware scan I couldn't do ANYTHING else! So I decided to get a dual core processor. The difference in performance from an FX60 and a X2 4800+ was small (geeks would argue differently but in Reality it is SMALL). So I bid on the 4800. When I installed it (as easy as dropping it in the slot putting the new heat sink and fan on and booting it up) I noticed nothing extraordinary, Bummer!! It was then that I started testing it 3D mark 06 scored my machine 2000 points higher than before the swap. I didn't see it, a testament to ...

  • Good CPU

I purchased this CPU for a computer that was given to me by a relative. I've been given a few computers that I run Linux on, or donate to a charity. I noticed after I compared two desktop computers side by side - one an Intel - one an AMD, and both made in the same year - that the AMD was upgradable and the Intel was not. I've noticed this many times about AMD products. Even though AMD is a couple generations behind Intel for Processors, they often make up for it with a better product for the average consumer. That's my opinion. I like this CPU. It's dual-core and I can run a lot more processes than before. I don't have to worry about opening too many tabs in the browser, or uninstalling stuff to keep the system from slowing to a crawl anymore. I have not yet tried it with gaming, but ...

  • AMD Athlon 64 X 2 4800+

I purchased this CPU with an MSI K8N motherboard with AGP. My previous system had a P4 3.2E @ 3.7 GHz with an ATI HD3850 AGP. The performance of this CPU is several times faster in every application than the P4 I had been using. I was even able to overclock my ram from DDR333 to DDR400 by using the on-board memory controller's direct link without the use of a northbridge chipset. I am able to tab out of UT3, open up Windows Live Messenger and Skype, open up Chrome and watch TWO HD VIDEOS in 1080 on YouTube without experiencing any stutter while opening another tab! Single and multi-threaded games run several times faster. I am able to max out every game released before of around 2010, and now the only time I have to lower settings is when my graphics card can't keep up, something I never ...
