This book was truly a Godsend and I do not exaggerate when I say it changed my life. For the first time in years, I was able to make sense of the chaos and trauma that a relationship with a person with BPD creates. Every page I read brought more enlightenment, healing, and inner peace into my world. It was like I finally had a road map or a secret agent decoder ring. It is really that powerful! As the cover states, it is written for those of us with a loved one with BPD- Borderline Personality Disorder. The main emphasis of the book is basically teaching new skills for how to cope with a pwBPD, set boundaries, and to recognize and end codependent behavior in the non-BPD. I found the book very easy to read on an intellectual level, without a lot of psych jargon. The first few chapters go into the symptoms and diagnosis of BPD, and the next chapters work on the relationship, communication skills, and different therapies that are quite effective for treating BPD. I did not find it blaming or condescending at all. Emotionally, it got grueling at times- but more because it was a lot of information to digest with a lot of revelations. It also really made me look at BPD in a different light, and it gave me so much understanding and empathy for those who suffer with this incredibly difficult disorder. Absolutely excellent reading! This gives a wealth of understanding regarding the complexities of the borderline personality disorder that can be so misunderstood! A must read especially for those who find themselves in the midst of this crazy making energy that can be so devastating on a family member and/or those we interact with daily at work or simply associate with occassionally. There is nothing to dislike about this book ... it's an education packed in this easy to read and understand book. Hats off to the authors!
The book is great about discussing the side of the person with BPD, but fails to recognize completely how incredibly difficult and stressful it can be to have to deal with the BPD person on a daily basis. The book spends 75% of its time being sympathetic to the BPD person, instead of spending more time on explaining to others how to deal with a BPD loved one. Furthermore, some of their suggestions are not possible, i.e. ending contact with the BPD person. When the BPD person is a close relative, like a mother, father, sister or brother, ending contact isn't always an option. Furthermore they underestimate the BPD's manipulative abilities to guilt trip people into maintaining contact. Seems to me that this book was written more for persons living with BPD themselves than a person learning to deal with a BPD loved one.Read full review
I was able to learn so much about someone that I care about. I needed to get an understanding of what I was dealing with emotionally and how I had to help when at times it would be very challenging. The best way to communicate is understanding and when the time is right meaning that you and your loved one are at a good place and you both are able to speak and listen to one another respectfully. It takes time but when you love someone it’s important you can make it happen and it will work.
