‘Swine Lake’ is an adorable children’s story with fun illustrations by Maurice Sendak, author of the Children’s Classic story, ‘Where the Wild Thing Are’. ‘Swine Lake’ tells the story of a mangy Wolf, who decides to go attend a performance by the “Boarshoi Ballet”, as a crafty means of moving himself closer to pigs that he hopes to enjoy as a tasty supper. When he goes to the ballet, disguised in a gentlemen’s coat, there are pigs everywhere. The audience is filled with pigs dressed in fine clothes, all enjoying the performance, and the ballet is a fine and lovely performance also. As the Wolf watches the pigs dance from his balcony seat, he begins to fall in love with them, and he becomes so caught up in the drama of the ballet, he feels he must go again to watch another performance. It is a sweet story with a fresh quality, and a surprising and nice ending. The illustrations by Sendak are slightly whimsical, with beautiful details, that help create the atmosphere of the Swine Lake performance, the stage and theatre, and all the costumes the pigs wear as they perform in the ballet. The combination of the well written story with amusing details, and the large and carefully drawn illustrations covering the pages make it an excellent and enjoyable children’s story.
