I loved this charming book as a child, and love it as an adult. I'm glad it is still in print and bought one for a elementary school teacher friend and one for myself. It describes itself as "a handbook of etiquette for young ladies and gentlemen to be used as a guide for everyday social behavior," which itself is funny. It presents absurdly delightful situations, ending with the question, "What do you say, dear?" The page is turned to reveal a corresponding everyday polite response that will never be forgotten. The illustrations by Maurice Sendak are equally charming. While it says it is for ages 4 to 8, I believe it goes beyond those limits. You don't want the book to end; it leaves you wanting more. Just learned a second book exists entitled "What do you do, dear?" by the same writer and illustrator, two of which are now on order.Read full review
I had this book as a kid and loved it!I got it for my son. Now I am buying copies for all his friends! Very funny and the illustrations by Maurice Sendak are charming! (The little dog he drew in the pictures was his dog Jenny.)
Son absolutely loves the book, he thinks its really funny. We bought the book because we saw it in a waiting room and son fell in love with it and asked if we could have our own copy.
