An excellent brief biography of the "Belle of Amherst," or somwtimes known as the mysterious "Woman in White." Emily D was both mystery and belle of Amherst, living in her childhood home all her life, right upo to her demise at the 19th century ripe age of mid-50's. Her secret life as a poet was kept from family and most friends until afdter her demise, a sad fact indeed. For her influence has been dramtic in the field of contemporary poetry. 20th and 21st century poets are more moved by her than were late 29th century poets, who were still writing in iambic pentameter, except Whitman. Free verse was born and raised by the dynamic duo of Whitman and Dickinson, two eccentrics of the northeast who forever changed American poetry, and thus influenced the world of literature, as the United States, not Europe, becamee the ceenter of culture, an event that took centuries to achieve. Meltzer, the late Milton Meltzer was a fine writer, and anyone wanting to know more about the elusive Emily Elizabeth Dickinson may start here and progress to more profound biographies. yet this biography is delightful and well written; well illustrated. It brings Emily's life to the layperson in a charming and erudite fashion.Read full review
