Rattle-Free and Loving It
Replaced the original ABR-1 on a 2008 '68 Custom Shop Reissue Les Paul Custom VOS with this one. I had already replaced the stop with an aged Gotoh because Gibson left the original just a little too shiny. The original bridge was aged, but I hated it for the same reason I hate all Gibson ABR-1s . . . that stupid wire retainer. I know it's historically accurate, but the rattle drives me crazy. Of course, it doesn't come through the amp, but I like to sit with a guitar unplugged sometimes. On the 'G' string at the 10th fret and above, the rattle was intolerable. Another reason to hate the original is that rattlely wire doesn't always keep the saddles from popping out. Try breaking a string and end up looking all over a dark stage for the rogue saddle. On the Gotoh, the saddles are captive in the bridge. I would call the look of the bridge and stop tail "not new" rather than "relic", which is what I was after. It is not gouged, pitted or rusted, just a nice uniform "not newness". LOL. There is no shininess anywhere. It was a perfect fit, and it intonated easily and accurately. The pre-notched saddles were deep enough that no additional filing was necessary. This, with D'Addario XL110 strings. Step-and-a-half bends mid-neck or at the dusty end of the fretboard and the strings stay put in the notches. YMMV. The only caveat I would offer is that the holes are slightly larger in diameter than the stock posts. Even so, with the guitar strung to pitch, there is no movement and there is no negative effect on the intonation. I also put a non-relic Gotoh ABR-1 on my 2019 Gibson Les Paul Classic in place of the Gibson ABR-1 and had the same experience. I only added this because some people are driven to distraction by little things like this. The Gotoh ABR-1 bridge easily gets 5 out of 5 stars.
