For years I tried out Musicman Stingrays, but they never quite fit my hands or sounded good enough 'off the shelf' to motivate me to spend $2500 on a bass. Then, by accident, I tried a Sterling Ray35 about a month ago. It was literally the nicest feeling and sounding bass I had every played. I bought one within 4 hours of playing it. It didn't hurt that it was $1000 instead of $2500. The only problem with the Ray35 double humbucker is playing funk. It is incredibly difficult to pop and snap with the double humbucker placement, so I started looking at 4 string, single humbucker Sterlings. A few days later I ordered the Ray34, Poplar Burl. I'm not someone who like to spend thousands on instruments. I've only played my Tobias Growler for 25 years now. But the sound quality and affordability of these Sterling basses is simply amazing. Getting 2 basses for under $2000 was the best money I've even spent. I'm now set for life.Read full review
