When Donald Trump became president, many recoiled at the vulgar speech coming from this new occupant of the highest office in the land. In Political Perversion, rhetorician Joshua Gunn addresses the mean-spirited turn in American political rhetoric, of which Trump is often considered the paragon. He argues that this phenomenon is best understood as a structural perversion in our common culture, branded by high-speed communication, chaotic violations of norms, and blatant dismissals of truth. Drawing on insights from critical theory, media ecology, and psychoanalysis, Gunn argues that perverse rhetorics dominate not only the political sphere but also our daily interactions with others, in person and online. From sexting to campaign rhetoric, Gunn investigates the pervasive crudeness that has spread through contemporary speech, both in personal conversations and in mass media. Looking at this shift toward perverse rhetoric, he advances a new way to interpret our contemporary political context and offers a vocabulary to inform our discussions of what seems to be dominating the voices coming from speakers and screens. Gunn shows that, along with shifts in the tone of US political discourse, the figure of Trump represents a more general decline of playfulness, creativity, and compromise and the ascent of a spiteful, scripted sentiment of selfish demand in US culture.
