The version I purchased was the Japanese version with English subtitles,I bought this version for the purity, while I saw the US version as a child,I think it's a good idea to see these movies unaltered. This movie is a classic, everything about it is...well,classic, get over the costumes already people!Part of the charm of these movies are the special,or rather not so special effects. I love that song the natives sing, made me think of rap music for some reason... If you stayed up late as a kid to watch the local horror host, it's worth having this one in your movie collection. The way they add an electrical power to king kong just like "that" is great,I figure he gets a static charge on his fur from the lightning...
Before viewing the movie, thinking of Godzilla clashing with King Kong is a brainstorm of an idea. Monster movie fans probably wet themselves with delight upon hearing the news...then they would probably vomit upon seeing the finished product. Let's just cut to the good and the bad... Good: Two of the most famous monsters clash in the land of Japan. Some sub par battles. Bad: Both characters look horrible and the special effects are sub par. The story is terrible: Godzilla comes out of a thawing iceberg...hmm, ok? King Kong is kidnapped on the island because some greedy guy wants to cash in on the world wonder (wow, just like in the original King Kong). Isn't it just so coincidental that Godzilla appeared JUST as King Kong is being captured. What then ensues is a series of poorly executed battles, King Kong being put to sleep with a recording of drums and then AIR LIFTED VIA BALLOONS to do battle with Godzilla. Did I mention how terrible the monsters look? I think they asked a preschool to make the costumes out of macaroni...or at least they should have, it would have looked better. There is just more to dislike than enjoy with this film. Although, there are worse Godzilla films out there. I think everyone should give this movie a try for either a good laugh or to know just what it is everyone is talking about when they reference the mediocrity of this film. Also, little kids will enjoy this film because they won't be so harsh to criticize it's lack of rewards. As I said, it had potential, but they blew it...completely. Still, Godzilla fans should be adding this to their collection.Read full review
This is a very good quality DVD version of the 1963 Toho classic. There were two versions with two different endings. The American version. Kong wins. The Japanese version. Godzilla wins. Unfortunately I got the American version, so Kong won on mine. If you grew up watching Godzilla on TV or at the movies, as I did, then you'll enjoy this one.

King Kong vs. Godzilla is the American screening of the movie which pits two of the greatest movie monsters of all time in full screen and in color for the first time. The transfer here is not the best of this movie that belonging to the Univeral dvd. But before Universal came along it was Good Times that had first put this movie to dvd. The characters while comical are engaging in the story telling and the monsters provide entertainment value in the final fight.

Japanese vewrsion taken from film print not negative. Is in widescreen ration that completely fills my lcd 19/9 tv. Good translation and very good quality. Does not look like taken from analog source. Only difference in quality compared to american version (universal) is color's don't seem to be a bright but very good quality indeed. Could not tell difference on mini portable dvd player. This is the version to buy. Beware of other sellers selling other versions. This is the quality version. I wish I bought mothra from this dude.
