I've been filming with affordable camcorders since the Flip cam back in the mid 2000's. I'm impressed with how much your money can get you these days. I've migrated away from using smart phones, but even if I hadn't, a camcorder is greatly preferable, this one especially. Simply opening or closing the monitor acts as the on/off switch. While I do prefer buttons, there's at least physical buttons for the two most important functions: zoom and play/stop/shoot, all comfortably designed for one-hand operation. Now if we're going to talk quality, I am very impressed with the video. It looks quite nice. For certain, this cam prefers well lit scenery. Being able to take continuous photos while recording video is fantastic (hey, a video is little more than continuous photos in itself), but the quality of the photos is a little less than the video. I still managed to take decent pictures, but this won't replace your little 20 megapixel digital camera. In proper lighting, pictures CAN look great. Just be sure to have continuous shooting on, to sort the wheat from the chaff. I highly recommend at least skimming the manual like I did. This 'corder can do a few things more than you'd expect. The one complaint many reviews have is: the mic isn't that good. To that I say: there's no such thing as a GOOD built in mic! There are no serious videographers who think there is. I bought this camcorder specifically to record a web show, with the waterpoofing allowing me additional creativity and possibilities. I bought myself a Tascam DR-05 to do the audio recording, and can easily sync up audio to video in ANY video software. I suppose if you're not a video editor, you'd be miffed over the mic, which is understandable. For my purposes, however, I could turn the mic off (which it can do) and be just fine. This is only day one of ownership, and can't wait to test the stability of video/pictures on a tripod, as well as underwater recordings. So if you want a relatively inexpensive camera (hey, I got it used) that is of useable quality, this is a good budget cam to screw around with.Read full review

I agree with one reviewer 100%. I like almost everything about this camera. It's easy to handle, great battery life and the 40X is spectacular but at the higher powers it needs a tripod. Internal memory is great. I haven't tried it underwater yet but I'm looking forward to trying it. My only drawback is the audio isn't as good as my old vixia. But that wouldn't keep me from buying this camera over again.

very nice camera.my wife uses it and she loves it.i love the end results which is very good videos.she was filming the 2 aquariums we have to show her sister and niece in the philippines.i watched the vids to scrutinize the quality and the vids were very nice..much better than i thought they would be.but her movements with the camera made me get back online and buy a tripod.now we set it up and no more problems.the camera and tripod will travel nicely on our motorcycle trips which is why we got them.canon is very good quality.i did not get the night vision version of this camera as we were never intending to ghost hunt..the wife is a chicken:-)

Awesome product! I bought three of these to do multi-camera live-streaming as well as to use as regular camcorders. I don't intend to use then underwater although they might get rained on or wet in outdoor live-streams or at parties. The shock proof rating let's me put these cameras in the hands of inexperienced users withoutworry. The 40x zoom capability is well beyond what is required of typical work. (I found the 57x of the R800 series impractical). With inexpensive memory I can record as long as needed.
