I needed a player as the first link in a rig to digitize my old Hi-8 analog video cassettes. I have this as a player, outputting to a Sony DCR-HC30 Digital 8 camera that has pass-through feature to a firewire cable that i connect to the Mac. Voila - my old movies are on the computer, quicktime files and safe from decomposing. This does the trick well. The CCD-TRV-328 has a nice bright little video display, and it's S-video output jack maximizes the output resolution of the old tapes, which is better than the simple RCA-jack yellow video jack option on cheaper models. (But if you don't have an S-video INPUT on your digitizing camera, between this camera and your computer, you can still use the 328's RCA option. Be sure that you get the cable that does this. It ought to come with the camera, but be sure. It has a mini plug at one end to connect to the TRV-328, and the three RCA jacks plus the S-video jack on the other). The 328 would work fine as a camcorder, but i haven't done so; i'm only using it as a player. Its pretty sturdy, and big compared to current machines. My HC 30 is 1/3 the size.Read full review

I have maybe ten video 8 tapes that have good memories of previous pets and events that had a major impact in my life. I have successfully played, rewinded, fastforwarded, ejected and put in more than one tape so I know it works well. The battery life I am unsure about because I only the power cord I like everything about this Handycam and only wished it were not so hard to have found this silly thing sooner. Thank you. I had an older 8mm camcorder that was almost three times the size as this one. I so love the size of this camcorder.
Who ever had this camera took very good care. It functions as brand new. I purchased it for the primary purpose of transferring old 8mm tapes to my computer. This has worked out extremely well. Now I will use it to record family history? As theater of, grand father of 15 and the great grand father of 20+ I have a lot to do. Thank you for a great camera.

About a month ago I bought the sony handycam for a great price and I've been satisfied ever since. I was most impressed with the study shot and the night shot plus, both are great features to have in any video situation. It's compact size makes it easy to carry and use without any hassle. The only real dislike I would have is the on/mode feature. I woulld have preferred to have one setting for the video camera and one for the video player. In a pinch that could be a small issue. other than that this cam has been one of me greatest investments and is a great investment for those who love to cherish moments in time.
I bought this primarily to transfer old family tapes that were recorded on a now defunct old camcorder. The quality on playback is better than I expected from this format and up-converted by the TV is actually quite good.. Even making new recordings on 20 year old tapes, the image quality is actually better than I expected.
