This is a nice camcorder to have. Night vision is ok but lacks distance with the internal ir light. Looking a maybe 10 feet of good clear image. After that no. Ordered a external ir light for $10 to double or triple that. Plenty memory and easy to use as camera or video. Will be fun for armature ghost hunts and letting kids be rock stars.

One problem: The camera works OK but the battery compartment is very difficult to open. I wonder if it had been bumped or something. I was able to open it but only with much effort.

The camera itself is fantastic. I bought it for the nightshot and it is great! The problem is that yes it has a 30gb hard drive, but a usb cable will not plug into the camera itself. It plugs into a docking station and the camera sits in the docking station. This is the only way to transfer videos from your camera to the computer. It takes an SD card but you cannot record videos to it, only stills. Most of these cameras do not come with the docking station or usb cables! The cables are relatively cheap, but the docking station is 85 dollars! It is not worth the price! Get a DCR SR45 instead and get the same amount of memory, but with a USB cable that plugs right into the camera for easy transfers. You can also record movies onto the SD card with the SR45. And it is the same price! I paid 127.50 with shipping for the sr42, and 127 even with shipping for the much better 45! ONCE AGAIN, I DO NOT RECCOMEND THE SR42, I RECCOMEND THE SR45!Read full review
As a Private Investigator, it is my personal responsibility for selecting and purchasing my own equipment. I've owed several DCR- SR42's at the same time (for professional conveniences) as did fellow colleagues. This durable Camcorder has an outstanding reputation amongst us for the exceptionally clear images it captures. Daylight or dimly lit evening hours produce sharp and pristine colors. Also standard yet exclusive to this Sony is it's "Night Shot" feature. During complete darkness it may capture a slightly less colorful imagine yet equally as precise and meticulous An additional standard feature, "Steady Shot", allows me unsurpassed results regardless to any unintentional trembling. However, when fully zoomed, a more conscious effort is a necessity to continue obtaining equally successful recordings. When seated at a conference table with at least a dozen colleagues, each one having purchased identical camcorders (the DCR SR42), it speaks volumes of it's distinctive and extraordinary abilities. Not standard, yet considerably inexpensive, the DCR-SR42 is devised with an existing fitting on it's bottom to accommodate any sized Tripod for sturdy/steady/hands free recording. Reading previous reviews regarding missing Docking Stations can be remedied by purchasing separately, a devise known as a dazzle (also costly) therefore gaining the same results as the missing Docking Station. Since the introduction of Camcorders into this line of work, I've used and experimented with multiple brand camcorders for various reasons. However, my Clients gravitate towards the undisputed successful results obtained from a Sony DCR-SR42. They recognize that meticulous and detailed chronicles, whether long or short distances, can not be contested. Due to this success, repeat Clients are welcomed habitual. I believe by far, this SUPERIOR Camcorder performs at a professional level with users ranging from a novice to a professional. Your wallet will also be equally gratified. . . Speaking for myself as well as my associates, in comparison to equivalently priced and operable camcorders, my most HIGHEST recommendation belongs to the remarkable Sony DSR SR42.Read full review
I bought the DCR-SR42 specifically for it's nightshot feature. I am completely satisfied with this camera's quality, functionality, and craftsmanship. It's a light weight and sturdy camcorder that fits in your hand comfortably. It's simple to use and understand and has a variety of video options (black and white, sepia, negative, etc...). There are only 2 downsides to this camera; First, you must have the Sony docking station to transfer files from the camcorder's 30gb internal memory to your computer. Second, it does not come with a built in "hot shoe" adapter to mount video lights. This last is not a big deal considering the number of brackets that are available to attach lights to it. I would recommend this camcorder to anyone looking for very decent quality and infrared nightshot for a great price.Read full review
