The canon zr40 isa great camera, I have used it for over 2 years now and love it.I will admit that at first I had my doubts, but after reading some books on how to light a mini dv camera, this camera became my best freind. The colors are great for a small one chip camera, and is very easy to use. Dislikes not a camera for a pro user great for beginner
I paid $80 for this zr-40 and it is well worth the money. I use it to record directly to my laptop with either the 1394 output or the svhs output and a canopus converter. It also records on digital tape (a hassle compared to a flash drive). There were later models about $40 more but I didn't see the the svhs output.
I bought the camera to use the pass through feature so I could record directly from a VHS player to my Mac. It works well for that as long as you remove the tape. Imovie crashes sometimes when there are blank spots on the VHS tape. I m not sure if that is a problem with the ZR 40 or iMovie. I will have to try it on a newer version of iMovie.
This is the second Canon ZR40 that I have. It is a great little MiniDV camera and I use it to transfer my MiniDV, 8mm, and VHS to my computer to convert them to digital format. However, the 1st one I have just quit working all of a sudden and I could not get it repaired at a reasonable rate. The coments that I have heard and read is that this is a consistent problem with this camera. It works great when its working, but the camera is not known for it's reliability.
This is a great camera - very easy to use and quality is great. We've had no problems with this camera.
