I have read favorable reviews on Synology products but have never owned one until now. Prior to this, I owned several QNAP NAS' which have served me well. I really didn't experience much issue with the QNAPs & they did what they were supposed to do pretty well. Synology has been known for the great software which runs their NASes. They were known to be the market leader on that front whereas QNAP were known for their great hardware. My experience with the DS918+ on the whole has been favorable. Installation & set up were straightforward, though I must say I did not find the software to be 100% easy to use. On a few occasions, I struggled to locate certain features. It seemed to me QNAP's NAS software wasn't inferior after all. They were about on par IMO. Hardware wise, the DS918+ provided much performance enhancing flexibility such as two M.2 NVMe slots & two DDR3 slots of up to 8GB of RAM. This, along with a proprietary hybrid RAID feature from Synology & options to grow the NAS config to beyond 4 HDDs does make the DS918+ an attractive proposition. Definitely one for the shortlist!Read full review

The later generations of Synology NAS units have definitely taken a slide down from a build quality point of view. Having previously owned a DS412+ (2012 model release) and been very happy with it for 6 years, I thought the DS918+ would be great. The drive sleds, the outer plastic case, the fans - everything is now as cheaply built as possible. The functionality is great, but every effort is made to ensure that the product is as cheap as possible. Still better than the QNAPs in my opinion (as they have the same build-cheap mentality and the DSM software is better) but yeah I can't give this DS918+ 5 stars. My 412+ is five stars, and it's 6 years old.

I previously had the DS218+ for about 6 months and it was a great product, never missed a beat. I now upgraded to the 918+ The migration was straightforward and everything went smoothly. I install my 2 HDD from the 218+ into the 918+ and it only took about 30min from start to finish to migrate to the new NAS. Synology make the process super easy. All data and setting restored to the new NAS and works perfectly.

Excellent product. Quiet, fast, efficient and reasonably priced. Software is unmatched by other NAS providers. This is probably the best value in home NAS now.
