Half-Life 2 for the Xbox was actually somewhat surprising. I bought the game for my Xbox recently just because I could get it cheap, and I wanted to see how well such a game would perform on the Xbox's hardware. I was not expecting much, but I was pleasantly surprised. I have owned and played HL2 on PC since it came out, and while I would suggest playing it on the PC (for better framerates, gameplay, and graphical features), the Xbox version is a decent alternative for those who do not have a high-end gaming PC. The Xbox version actually looks fairly decent, but does have it's laggy moments. The loading screens do get a bit tiresome, but go relatively quickly. The gameplay performs almost like Halo, which makes it easy to navigate and fight with. The game is still very much playable, and while there are the laggy/freezy moments, owning some Combine forces can still be done. It looks like Valve pretty much took HL2, forced the Xbox code and controls onto it, and slightly lowered the graphical settings of the Source engine. The physics are still intact, as well as the comprehensive coding of the Source engine. Overall, this is a great alternative for the 'cheap gamer' who still uses an Xbox. I would recommend the title to those, and to those of us who want to see what it would be like on t he Xbox (such as myself). Fairly decent game to try out.Read full review
First of all, I'd like to say that this is one of the best First Person Shooters ever, and I'll tell you why. You arrive at a place known only as "Citidal 17." You're on the run almost from the start, you have no weapons, minimal health, and no idea whats going on. You keep running until you meet up with an old friend, you're given one weapon, a crowbar, the rest you have to find on your own. Now I don't want to give away anything more about the story. If you like a game where you're given challenges that not only test your trigger finger, but your mind as well, then you'll love this game. Don't get me wrong tho, you'll need a fast trigger finger and plenty of adrenalin to get threw this game. Packed with great graphics and excellent weapons, Half-Life 2 is the perfect game for anyone looking for a First Person Shooter thats full of fun and excitement, as well as heart pumping action and gore. Now when it comes along to the who should play this, I would have to say ONLY people who can take seeing characters chopped in half, burned alive, and blown to pieces. Now here comes the reason I gave this game a 4 out 5, to get the whole story line you HAVE to play the first one, but the game play and graphics are still great.Read full review
I originally bought the PC version of this game; I loved it on my laptop. When I bought my XBox 360, I was looking for cheap games, so I got the original XBox version of this game. Playing on the console or on the PC does not make a big difference to me. It's very interesting how Gordon has to go around solving problems (like if he was putting puzzles together) sometimes with Alyx, sometimes alone. The graphics look really good, making me thank God that we don't really have giant bugs here. (I hope not...) When I play, I actually AM Gordon Freeman. So I even get startled when a zombie or an alien attacks me by surprise. I liked the game so much, that I went ahead and bought the "Orange Box" for XBox 360. (Includes: HL 2, HL2-Episodes 1 & 2, Portal, and Team Fortress 2)
At first, I thought this was going to be the greatest first person shooter ever. The beginning of the game is a blast, it is very well planned and immersive. The attention to detail is incredible and the non-playable character models are the best I’ve ever seen. Some of the visuals are really something to see. Then it starts to kick in. The control scheme is very limiting, only allowing the player to use two different stick configurations. Chances are, if you are a FPS junkie like myself, your choice control scheme isn’t in there. This pretty much ruins the game. There are no extras, no other side distractions or minigames. nothing to read into the story. The controls become clumsy, as your character slows down to nearly a stand still when crouched or when fitting through a low pipe or a tight space. These hang-ups are fatal in a FPS, frustrating to say the least. There is no button to change weapons, you must remove your thumb from the left stick to use the D-pad, and if you play inverted pitch, the weapon select is backwards also, adding to the frustration. This game could have been great, but in this day and age a man has gotta have choices. Don’t waste your money unless you already have both Halos, Timesplitters 2, and XIII. 6/10Read full review
Now, before you rail off about how good the graphics of Half-Life 2 were, first know that I whole heartedly agree. The graphics are butter-smooth, with amazing depth and detail. The gameplay is also a wonderous feet. The gameplay is realistic and fun, and the plot is genuinely entertaining. Probably the most astounding part of the gameplay was the physics. If you knock into things they fall over, and the gravity gun adds a whole new level to a first-person shooter. The only thing I can complaing about is the injustice the Xbox does to the game. The graphics [which again are breath-taking] look much better on a computer. Though, as rumor has it, Microsoft plans on remaking the game for the Xbox 360 which should give the game all the glamour it deserves.
