The only reason this router got a good instead of excellent is because it may not be for the faint of heart. Setup was very easy but once you get into the advanced options it gets a little more difficult. Anyway the router with the 1.12 firmware update works wonderful. I also bought a DLink N-Draft PCMCIA card and with the 2 together I get connected at around 10,000 to 12,000kbps thru the wireless. Great range, all my hardware is in the basement and we can go anywhere in the house and still get signal and that's on 2.4GHz have not needed to try 5.8GHz (Which the router can do). The router is a little expensive but if your a gamer and or use wireless allot I highly recommend this router and the card for the laptop.
This router is very fast and stable. It can do 802.11 n/g/b at the same time, while having the max speed of the adapter. The downside of this router is that it will only do 2.4GHz or 5Ghz. Not both at the same time for g and b devices, and it is expensive. If you play a lot of games, or watch videos and download large files, i recommend this router. This router has tons of gaming settings to allow game consoles and PCs through the router for quick gaming. It can also be setup to use a USB hard drive or Flash drive so that everyone on the network can get files without having to go from computer...Read full review to computer. But if you want simultaneous 2.4 and 5GHz dualband, i recommend getting the Xtreme N Duo router, but is more expensive than this one.
I bought the DGL-4500 Wireless router as my old Netgear router was getting long in the tooth and just not getting the job done with the addition of one X-box and when two were thrown in the mix online performance was about zero. I didn't know if the new DGL-4500 would make that much difference but now when my nephew comes over we can both get our Xbox's on my wireless network and am only limited by my local service providers DSL speed. Online game connections have really improved and haven't had any drops other than when the microwave is on. The set up was very easy and the menu system easy to navigate. I still haven't set up port forwarding or any option other than security. I had to back down my security from the highest level to a lower one so my Sony BD player could stream Netflix. Sony should upgrade their security levels for their BD players! I still have an existing problem when the microwave is on, it shuts down the wireless connections. The router is in the next room behind the microwave. I don't feel this is a router issue but a conflict with proximity to the MW that will remain as nothing is moving at this point. I left the router in the box for a couple of weeks not looking forward to setting up a new wireless device. I didn't need to worry though as the Wizard does most of the hard part and walks you thru the setups. The other devices like my X-box, BD player, and Wii were easy to set up too as there is a button on the side of the router to press when those devices are looking for the new wireless connection password. I do like the fact that the router has a USB port that can be shared by pc type devices. I'll buy an external USB drive for extra storage and backups. You could use the port for a USB printer and a couple of other uses I'm sure. I like the ease of installation, a host of options to customize game play priority and ease of use. So far I haven't had a need to set up port forwarding or Game Fuel, I think it's called. But those options are there if needed. The DGL-4500 is much better than the old router right out of the box. I would buy the product again but shop around for the best price as I've seen prices from about 85 to 200+.Read full review
