These speakers are awesome with so many convenient features others don't offer. The sound is superb, rivaling that of a large stereo system! The large sub woofer (which also has the amplifier inside) is well designed accoustically with large air port to allow booming bass. The right/left speakers are really great looking on a desk and have the best mid and high range sounds. They have two tiny tweeters in the top column, and a mid range speaker in the base of the unit with nicely hidden sound port at bottom for mid range sound. These speakers have adjustable angles to fire sound straight out or siightly up. They come with a credit card sized wireless remote that controls treble, base, sub base and on/off standby for the unit. It can also be used with a standard programmable universal IR remote. It has earth shattering bass and clear crisp mid range and highs. They are just right to use with thin flat panel TVs that have such small speakers with terrible sound, offering a much better listening experience. It has a small rocker swith on the right speaker base that also will control volume and on/off plust a jack that will accept headphones for private listening without disturbing others. When headphones are plugged in, the other input sound is muted. In addition to the mini stereo plug connection to sound source such as computer, Ipod, Ipad or smartphone, it also has RCA right/left inputs which are nice for input of sound from a cable box, DVR, etc. I would reccommend these to anyone. They are the top of the line and the very best in their class, and have the Altec Lansing high quality.Read full review
I am an audiophile who primarily loves expensive headphones, though I've heard of a fair share of multimedia speakers (I pick up a lot of them at thrift stores). The Altec Lansing VS4221 was a high-end offering at the time of release, costing a hefty $130. Well, for that price, the only thing it has going for it is its fairly high output (in terms of volume). Because its tonality is downright terrible, and is plagued by several other crippling sound quality issues. In fact it sounds worse than most $30-$50 multimedia sets I've heard. The VS4221 and its cousin VS4121 (very similar sets, key difference is the remote control) came out to compete with Creative's popular I-Trigue multimedia speakers, and sport very similar driver arrangements: 2 tweeters + 1 woofer per satellite, and a fairly sizable subwoofer module. My wife happens to have the I-Trigue 2200 which was a direct competitor to the Altec offering, and I did some comparative listening. The I-Trigue 2200 is actually a very good speaker set with a very even frequency response (check measurements at Toms Guides), minus some issues in the bass range. It was immediately apparent that the Altec Lansing VS4221 suffers from very uneven frequency response, with a very nasally midrange and recessed treble. Bumping the treble control up brings out some sparkle, but does nothing to reduce the nasally midrange. The bass is likewise problematic - while the extension is very good, it is impossible to find the right balance between it and the rest of the frequency range. Acoustically the VS4221 is just an awful-sounding speaker set. I personally advise looking elsewhere.Read full review

I bought these for my boyfriend who LOVES to play his music LOUD!!! and with these he can....at His house! When we turned the up in my apartment, I said "those have eviction notice written all over them...LOL" But he lives in a more rural setting than I do so they are great for him. The sub is Larger than I expected & the speakers height is adjustable kind of a neat design feature. Only issue he has had so far is that changing the battery in the remote can be tricky the lil slide cover is hard to get open, but if that is the only issue, he is good! We have had other brands of speakers trying to find ones that he likes and the sound quality on the Altec Lansing's is so much better and the bass is booming!!! All in all a great set of speakers, yes I would buy them again.
My brother is a musician and has this same set in his office and recommeded I buy one for myself. So I purchased this set not knowing really first hand what to expect, but trusted his knowledge and advice. I knew I could not go wrong when the outside of the box reads, "Just listen to this!" Simply stated that is all you need to do as it has a WOW factor all it's own! Easy to connect and portable. Love the remote this model features, too! I might add that it has a very classic look to it so you don't have to hide it! I give it a big 10!
