I finally broke down and paid up for the more expensive capture device. I bought a $10 cheap version earlier and there is no comparison the El-Gato is the way to go if you want good images. The $10 EZ-Caps may be cheap but their image quality is terrible. I kept getting ghosts, brightness issues, and a peculiar problem where I always had a yellow bar going right down he center. The audio also was bad. The El-Gato has none of these issues and records a clean and continuous picture. The only real problems I have with the El-Gato is that the image is a little blurry so you really don't get the crisp definition of the pixels that you would see on a more recent HDMI recording. The audio sounds a little bit "tinny" especially if you're used to high-fidelity sound but that's not the fault of the quality, it's the technical limitations of the equipment. The software install was easy. The only thing I don't like about the software is that it holds your hand too much and it asks if you want to send this as a youtube video. Thanks but I like doing a little editing first and the editor that it comes with isn't good enough to do the job. What's worse, if I have to stop recording and start over it makes me start the rendering of the video forcing me to cancel before I can start over. I should be able to stop recording and save when I say so. Not start an operation just to stop it so I can move on. Overall the product isn't bad. If you're working with 8-bit analog tech this seems to be your only real option. Don't waste time or money on the $10 Cheapies, buy quality. This gets the job done right.Read full review

The product seems to be easy to use going by the reviews (also the most expensive on the market). However, I could not install it. on my computer. I emailed the supplier for help after giving all the details. However, the supplier asked me to return the item because this was the "last" item they had. No mention of help. So I returned it. I now have another brand "Diamond" which was easy to install. I am using it.

Really and truly incredibly easy to install and use. Quality of the transfers versus higher quality equipment? Meh. It may be my setup, but audio slips out of sync consistently, and because all of my material started out in analog, this next stage away from the master is a bit fuzzier. With all that said, it's still great. I transferred all of the old family stuff from VHS, which was a load off my mind. And many VHS's no longer need space on the shelves. The slight quibbles I have are more than made up for by the ease of use and the overall OK quality.

It's easy enough to use, and if you have any difficulty setting it up, there are plenty of videos online (in places like Youtube) that will show you how to use it. Quality is nice. It recorded my home videos from VHS and was a great present!

I found the Elgato to be exceptionally easy to install. The very brief instructions are easy to follow. The unit works quite well when you have a fast computer. On an older laptop my results were disappointing, as I had a lot of audio/video syncing issues. On my desktop (win-10-64) it worked well with no out of sync issues.
