I'm an internet oddball with ten year-old PCs who (1) runs a Linux OS (Puppy 4.00), and (2) still uses a dial-up connection. If you're a Linux newbie - or would like to be - I can wholeheartedly recommend the Puppy distribution as the most user-friendly one that I've come across. And, if you're still into dial-up, save yourself some grief and purchase an external analog modem with a serial port connection. There are quite a few new and good used ones for sale/auction on eBay. Most older internal PC modems are "winmodems" that are often problematic when trying to connect a Linux distro to the 'net. I bought this used Actiontec modem BIN and am very pleased with its small size and relative quietness when it dials the connection. Save an old PC from the landfill - install and run Linux on it, and marvel at its superiority to Win98 and other MS feeble attempts.Read full review
The modem works well and the price was low, the best is ,that I need no serial port any more for new computers
