A good reliable product! Setting up is easy to do and online support is available, if needed. Being able to use either Ethernet or USB cable is another nice feature of this model. Modem case is compact and built to withstand rough treatment. LED lights are easy to see and give a quick indication of system status. One thing I would change: do away with the separate power supply and design a modem with one built in. This would eliminate need for using yet another 120 volt outlet. Also, on the newer, smaller units, I would include a small stand similer to the older, larger boxes. The small unit always seems to want to flip over on its side.
I bought this item to use on my parents (senior citizen) DSL install. Worked great. Note that if you have trouble w/ the install, call AT&T and tell them that you are using a modem that has been used before on another network. They can walk you through the process of RESETTING the modem and going in to change the settings. It's very easy, but most of the modems they deal w/ are present for AT&T. Mine had been used on another carrier...but i neglected to explain that (to the agent on the phone ...in India) Works great. They support it. I"d recommend
may be used as modem only, in bridged mode, with a separate router to manage LAN, or as a router with a switch to provide more ports, as it has only 1 lan jack. i'm as of yet unsure about using it with different service providers, other than the original one (e.g. verizon, bellsouth). btw, the user interface varies according to the provider.
I love this modem! It's SIMPLE and that's what I wanted. I replaced a TrendNet modem with this one and what I didn't like about the TrendNet was that it wasn't user-friendly. I'm not on the IT level, but I'm very experienced with working on computers, so it's not like I need soccer-mom level. That TrendNet modem was waaaay too complex and it made me pull out my hair. I had a lot of trouble and I couldn't get the NAT settings to comply with XBOX Live. This Westell 6100 works great with XBOX Live. I have it set up as a pass-through and am using my router to connect the PPPoE. This modem DOES have router functions which I used until I got my router, and they worked just fine. The model I got came branded by Verizon, but the only issue with that was I had to turn off the walled garden to bypass registration. It works great with my AT&T Southeast service.Read full review
Very good DSL modem, simple and reliable. It does not require any drivers if you connect it via Ethernet (RJ45 or network connector). You need drivers only for USB connection, they could be downloaded free at www.westell.com. Your DSL provider will give you a CD with setup software (Verizon does as the part of DSL service). The software will do everything automatically, you do not need to worry about anything, and the CD already contains required USB drivers as well. Again, very good modem if you're looking for something reasonably priced, reliable, and simple.
