I have owned the Jornada 72X series before. In High school, it was perfect for writing papers and doing minor research in HTML pages; such as wiki and news articles. The small keyboard was perfect for someone like me, with oddly skinny fingers. One can also add from a small range of compatible wireless cards to give the Jornada network capabilities. If one really thinks on the subject, these machines here were the predecessors to today's Netbook fad. With minor changes, hardware upgrades, and a different marketing strategy, the modern Netbook was born. I find myself in a predicament where I need this companion by my side yet again. With my new job, I always need access to my spreadsheet at any time of the day. A normal Pocket PC has proven insufficient when competing with the Jornada 72X's fully capable keyboard. My Netbook can't compete either; The Jornada can fit in my pocket. These machines are not all about business. There are plenty of sources on the Internet for simple, yet entertainiing games, social software like I.M., and media. I, myself, had a third party video player on my last one, allowing me to watch my favorite animes during down time. Whether you need to do just business basics, write papers, check news articles, mild entertainment, keep in touch, or just to tinker with another electronic; The Jornada 728 is a much less expensive alternative to today's bulkier Netbooks. If all you need is bare minimum processing, then the Jornada will get the job done.Read full review
I like the compact size, I love the rechargeable battery. It has windows and can be connected to your desktop computer or even a printer. You have access to the internet and it even has a PDA system. It came with an ac adapter and also a car adapter and a docking station which I love. The draw back is that there are newer models out there, so when I went to order a case for it, it has been discontinued. I decided to buy it because I could get connected to the internet with it when I was away from home. The other thing that I was not happy with was the fact that it did not come with a user guide. Overall I am very happy with my HP Jornada 728 and I would reccomend it to others. Thank you! Mary Hale
The HP Jornada 728 is a wonderful little computer. I use it heavily for business and for personal work. The 728 is the last in a long and trusted line of handheld computers from HP. Most people have never seen a handheld computer. When I'm using it, and people see it, they stop to ask about it. They’re surprised at its small size, large screen, keyboard, and what it can do. Many think it's 'cute' and wonder what games it has. Since I never play games, I can't answer that question; it's always used for serious work. However, I’ve heard that games are available for it. Though it's not a 'full blown' computer, it runs the applications that I need. There are many add on applications out there which will run on this little wonder, allowing me to do all sorts of tasks that I would normally need a laptop for. The unit also syncs information with my laptop and desktop computers. Any changes made on my laptop, desktop, or Jornada, are all automatically updated when the unit is docked. All my Outlook contacts are easily carried with me wherever I go. Word and Excel documents also go where I go. When I'm in a meeting, I can pull up information on my Jornada that others can only access from their desk. My favorite feature is the keyboard. Because I do so much data entry while on the road, a built in keyboard is a must. The keys are just large enough to type on normally. Even with the nice keyboard, when the unit is closed, it fits easily into my back pocket or jacket pocket. The long battery life, over 10 hours, is a huge plus. I can easily leave home, sit in the airport and use the unit, take a long flight, all the while working on my Jornada, and arrive at my destination with more than enough battery power left. Personally, I believe the two major downfalls of the Jornada line were the fact that most of the public never saw one and their price. Though the line of Jornada HPC’s have been out for many years, it still amazes me how many people have never seen one or heard of one. I’m constantly asked, “Where can I get one?” The Jornada 728 is not a substitute for a laptop, but it sure comes close in my realm. I think of my Jornada 728 as a small extension of my laptop computer. When I don’t need the power of my laptop, the Jornada is perfect.Read full review
I'm a Professional Engineer. I bought it for the PDA values...Calendar, appointments, etc. It is also preferable to the pocketable PDAs for use with spreadsheets which Engineers use alot. The biggest disappoints were (1)the difficulties with ActiveSync connecting the 728 to my desktop. Once connected though, they stay connected until I break the connection; (2) the connection to the internet via a WiFi Card. I get an hour glass until I 'touch' the screen and I DON'T get all of the info available on a site by site basis. For instance, I don't get all of "My Ebay." None of my watch list shows up. Of course these problems are compounded by the fact that Linksys techs aren't familiar with the Jornada 700 series and HP has COMPLETELY abandoned them...no support at all...and the HP techs I talked to weren't knowledgable of them either. Pretty poor considering the unit is barely 5 to 6 years old.Read full review
I use my ipaq 3715 for watching movies and surf the net and ocassionaly work on excell spreadsheets. I bought the 728 for its bigger screen and the keyboard. I noticed that the screen is far from the quality you get in a pocket pc. You still get a nice resolution and colors but the refresh is kind of slow and this is a 64 MB model. However is much better than a ppc for viewing web pages and office documents because the bigger screen size. If you want portability go for a ppc because this is a small machine but still not very pocketable!!. I think it is very good for a student or a traveling salesman because you can have all the m$ office functions in a very small and confortable device than also allows you to listen to mp3 files. You can watch some videos but you need to degrade them so they are playable so dont think in this machine as a video player.Read full review
