In the interim we bought an iPAD Air, which I find has too many touch-sensitive features on-screen, so that I was always invoking commands that I didn't want. The 1st Gen also has the larger screen size and the 'heft' that I missed in the Air; and I actually love the old-style graphics on the Notepad, Calendar and Music player. The only drawback with the 1st Gen is that its Operating system is too old to handle many of today's high-powered apps.

You cant use it to view PDFs that you try to sync via iTunes. You have to upload them to Online storage and download it to the iPad itself. However, not all is bad..... Dump a bunch of movies on it or songs and it is great for road trips, or just laying on your bed to read the news. It was a snap to jailbreak it (if you really need to get down and dirty). If it would at least sync my PDFs I would have rated higher.

What I didn't expect, but love is that it's also great for the kitchen! (family calendar, recipe file, weather, listening to NPR while I cook, etc, etc). I've taken to putting it in a dock in the kitchen while I'm not using it on a trip or in the evening. It's a great 'appliance' in my kitchen.
And the battery life is nothing short of amazing. I got stuck in Denver last week on a business trip due to weather. My chargers were in my check in luggage. I was in Denver (enroute to DC) for 24 hours, the iPad lasted through three 2-hour movies, two 2hr TV shows, tons and tons of emails and even a couple hours of editing business documents. I estimate a solid 12 hours of actual use one charge.. and it still had 20% charge left.
But why Good and not Excellent. The hard ware is there, it's excellent for travel and home use, maybe even business. It could replace my laptop.
But the software isn't "there" yet. The OS NEEDS multitasking and a few other tweaks and features to make it useful for business travel or even just to make it a good family kitchen appliance. It needs this and some other things to make it 'there'.
And the iPad-specific apps are seriously lacking to date. Yes, you can use iPhone apps. but why? they are small and built for that tiny screen. They feel pretty useless on an iPad. Yet, there are SO many apps that COULD be done on the iPad that don't exist yet, or are on the iPhone but would be much much better on the iPad.. and they aren't there yet. For example, there are some decent recipe apps, but all just not really 'there'. They have keynote and pages, but they aren't 'there' yet either. So much potential.. and not quite there.
The good news is that the OS is supposed to upgrade this fall, and the apps are coming and getting better.
My advice is GET AN iPad.. you'll find it's much much more useful than you ever thought, and will be finding uses you didn't know you had.
BUT.. wait till fall when the software (OS and apps) catches up to the hardware's potential.

Because I have accepted his only son who is Jesus Christ to save me, I get to listen to 2723 songs on this device until I am old and have passed on everything to my love ones. My parents gave me the best through their siblings, and I must do the same for my future generations. It is amazing that 32GB can fit more than 2000 songs. These songs were imported from 218 or so CDs from my family heirloom. I have only had this for about 2 years, however, it has been used as a music player... There is so much you can do with this first generation iPad, but I would recommend it as a music player for grown kids. Thank you for reading my review. [I ask to be perfect for the remainder of my existences.]

It is a bit heavy to use as an e-reader all the time but do like the backlighting for night viewing in the dark. A bit hard to view in the direct sunlight. Needs strong WiFi source to get quick downloads so that is a potential drawback even in the house vs the 3G model like the iPhone. As a result I'm looking for a WiFi repeater to get better signal into parts of the house further away from source. I like the larger screen compares with smaller 7 inch readers and tablets coming out - makes it much easier to read and manipulate. My wife loves using it so I may need to buy her one ! Price is a bit of a down side but if you are going to use it as a mini computer then it costs less than an AirBook e.g.
I might rate it higher if I can get hold of a good repeater to send signal into other parts of house. However, beside that problem I really enjoy using it. I found a nice inexpensive leather case on eBay which protects it and is a good addition to get. I would buy the iPad again but might consider an AirBook instead for a second one.
