Well let me start by saying this up front. There is no way that I bought this to compete with my DSLR Nikon. That being said right now I have a D300S,D700,D610 and bought this as a nice little carry around for everyday candid and spur of the moment pix. I love nature photography and live in Northern Wisconsin. Driving down the road you see bald eagles in a variety of situations and it's always when I don't have my bags of equipment with. I used to have a Olympus SP 815 UZ that work perfect for that use but sadly it ended up at bottom of lake Superior. I know the limitations of these cameras. But they are still better than phone cameras and point and shoots . Hell I paid more for some of my 82mm filters than this whole kit. But I did get a chance to use one awhile back at a street fair just to see how they worked. Nice pics and tiny. The guy used my 700 and was just in shock at size, weight and complexity and just shot in P. But that's why I got this just a nice but quality camera. Also Olympus has made good products for consumer market since seventies and has always been smart enough to market and stay focused on their niche and I for one applaud them for making quality products that the general public can use and afford. It's kind of like Subaru used to advertise back in the 70s. "More Mercedes drivers have Subarus as there second cars than any other brand" and that was true for some reason in Northern lattitudes back then.Read full review

Don't buy an Olympus PL-1 unless you want to risk a photography addiction. And if you do buy one, make sure and buy the guide book "E-PL 1 for Dummies" by Julia Adair King on the first day you buy your Pen. The Olympus Pen PL-1 is probably more responsible for the popularity of Micro Four Thirds Mirrorless cameras than any other model of camera. It looks like an old rangefinder. It's inexpensive. It's light, small, and best of all this camera and it's small lenses can take photos that are comparable with the most expensive, large DSLR cameras on the market. It has fully customizable controls, with a PASM dial on the top of the camera. This means you can use automatic settings, or select the aperture size, or shutter speed, or use full manual controls. The latest model of this camera is the Olympus PL-8 and the camera body alone costs $550. A good used PL-1 with the issued "kit" lens is about $100, and is a gateway drug to an addiction for the supremely capable, fun, and easy system of Micro Four Thirds cameras. All the Micro Four Thirds lenses ever made since 2008 by Panasonic or Olympus will fit and work on this camera. The PL-1 has image stabilization built into the camera body, so that by using a ten dollar adapter available for your old 35mm film camera lenses, you can use the excellent old lenses you may have lying around, or can buy at used shops for nearly nothing. There are more capable cameras on the market than Micro Four Thirds cameras, but they are expensive, and heavy, and make you stand out like a flare carrying around a big DSLR. The image quality of this camera is very close to those, and a MFT camera exceeds the image quality and is so much more capable than your little point and shoot camera or smartphone you have to experience it to believe it. Treat yourself to an Olympus PL-1 if you want to learn photography. There's not a better camera to start with, or perhaps, to end up with forever.Read full review

Compact, beautifully designed and easy to use the Olympus e-pl1 is the best camera I've ever owned. Picture quality is superb and there are lots of options for creative color variations. The controls are well placed and the presence of a built in flash makes it more convenient to use than newer models. Many sellers offer the cameraas a kit with a exquisitely designed 40-140 mm zoom lens, equivalent to a 85-300mm zoom. This is a great performer that will give you fabulous photos.
