Hard, edgy, yet sophisticated...Many consider the subversive Heaven Tonight, to be Cheap Trick's best album. The first time I listened to Cheap Trick was when I played "Surrender," way back in 1979. I remember laying on the bean bag chair, next to my water bed, in my room with blue walls and thinking, this is the best thing I ever heard!! For those who are cracking up about me having a bean bag chair and a water bed...it was the 70's! The sound was so unique and creative. I played the incredibly catchy song over and over for two weeks. That drum roll drove me wild! It still does. I loved the thrilling guitars and back up vocals. But, my favorite thing about the song was the lead singer...Oh, soooooo SARCASTIC!! I relished the attitude in his voice. Now, my favorite CT song is "Auf Wiedersehen," but only by a hair. The powerful and dramatic "Auf Wiedersehen," starts intense then continues to grow till the monster explodes with forceful guitars and pounding drums, while Robin is psychotically screaming, "Suicide!" The lyrics, "There are many here among us, who feel that life is a joke," refer to Bob Dylan's, "All Along the Watchtower." Tom debuted the 12-string bass guitar that he invented, around the time of this album. I can't listen to The Move cover, "California Man," after a certain time of night, or I'll wake up too much, from dancing my a** off. The bitter lyrics contrast great melody in "Takin' Me Back." "Heaven Tonight," haunts with an eerie chant. "High Roller," is based on a Wisconsin drug dealer. "On Top Of The World," and "Stiff Competition," rock like crazy. The style of "On The Radio," and "How Are You," provide texture to the CD. The songs don't all sound the same. Each one is a winner.
