Types of Indian currency

These are the types of Indian currency that were printed:

• Banknotes – This was paper Indian currency that started in 1770 under a variety of banks, including the Bank of Bengal. The first notes were printed on one side.
• Specimens – Indian currency distributed to banks to assist foreign travelers. Also called Travelers Checks, this helped Indian currency to be recognized by foreign countries.

Is currency valuable with no grade on the PMG certificate?

PMG or paper money grading is recognized internationally as an independent third-party paper money grading service. If currency is torn or damaged, PMG checks for authenticity and issues an ungraded or Net PMG grade. Assuming it’s authentic, PMG issues a genuineness guarantee certificate with the Net grade. This does not mean a note has little or no value. On the contrary, if you want to purchase old Indian currency notes, odds are high they will have one or more tears.

Assuming you’re looking for authentic old Indian currency notes, the authenticity likely matters more than the grade. Although not necessarily old, rare money may be ungraded or have a net grade. Although it does not happen often, notes are occasionally misprinted. This can result in one side of the note being printed upside down, or maybe the note was double-stamped. These errors are quickly caught and corrected, leaving only a handful of authentic bills in circulation with a misprint. Typically, many collectors search for some time to locate one of these rare bills.

What Indian currency is included in collection types and lots?

While everyone’s collection or lots may differ, these are common Indian currency found in sets:

• Face – These have the portrait of the person or object shown clearly on one side of the note.
• Commemorative – These are notes issued for a short period of time to honor a person or event. Collections often contain full sheets or blocks of commemorative banknotes.
• Certification – Some banknotes were never officially circulated to the public. Others were purchased directly from a treasury or mint, usually in uncut form. These are known as uncirculated currency. Circulated currency means it was issued to the public and could have been used as legal tender.
