Please look at other Roman era gilt iron/metal alloy pieces in museums from the era and you will see the same almost copper like coloring were the gilt has worn off. We suspect the black enamel on the bottom of the piece is a vitreous enamel consistent with the period. Most welds are in tact - again, a rarity, keeping the individually cast pieces solidly attached to each other.”
