Seller Notes: “This ancestral figure is depicted standing with slender limbs. Carved wood with a light-brown ... “This ancestral figure is depicted standing with slender limbs. Carved wood with a light-brown patina, paint decoration, cowrie shells, mud, and hair. This totemic being features a large ovoid decorated face with a pronounced nose, cowrie shells representing its eyes, the mouth is slightly angled, and it has protruding ears with decorative earrings. It also displays a fiber and cowrie shell necklace; cowrie shells are a symbol of status and wealth. The carvings on its shoulders and chest represent the scarification. Ritual scarification was part of a young man?s initiation into the secret and exclusive male world of the ceremonial house. The mask-like faces on his shoulders and base represent bush or tree spirits (winjembu) associated with the hunting of wild pigs, which the Sawos considered a legitimate substitute for a human victim of the head-hunt. The legs are slightly flexed, with the arms hanging straight down. The headdress and hair was professionally restored.”
