About this product

Product Information

In the 80s, there was a horror franchise that ruled over cinema: A Nightmare on Elm Street. It got turned into a game by LJN. Nightmare on Elm Street was released in 1990 on the Nintendo Entertainment System. Rather than strictly follow the events of the movie, this NES title used an original story. In it, Freddy has come back to terrorize the children of Elm Street. To defeat this monster once and for all, you need to collect his bones and throw them into a furnace. Only then will you vanquish Freddy Krueger once and for all. A Nightmare on Elm Street is an action platformer. Your character will jump and punch his way through a multitude of levels. This game is slightly nonlinear, which means you can select levels in any order. Players will choose their level from the main hub world. From this hub, you'll go into a house and collect the bones within. You'll need to watch out for deadly enemies such as snakes, skeletons, and ghosts. Once you collect all the remains, it's time to fight a boss. These bosses are usually different forms of Freddy, such as a giant version of his face. Just like in the movie, it's important that you stay awake while playing. If your character falls asleep, you enter the dream world. In this world, the enemies hit harder and have more health. You can keep yourself awake in the game by grabbing coffees and touching a boom box.To help you combat the evil hordes in this game there are a number of dream warrior forms. Each of these dream warriors increases your combat abilities substantially. For example, one form lets you shoot projectiles straight up while another allows you to jump further. However, these forms are not available from the start. You'll discover them as you play; many of them will be hidden behind walls or under staircases. However, once you lose a life, you'll need to collect the forms again. Luckily, there are multiple dream warrior forms available in each stage. This game has a multiplayer mode that supports up to four players. This title is one that supports four-player gaming using the NES Satellite or NES Four Score. Multiplayer gameplay is the same as the single-player mode. Each player will still collect the remains of Krueger and attempt to defeat frightening bosses. The only difference is that now you'll have four times the firepower to help you destroy Freddy's remains. The graphics in this title are inspired by the horror genre. The game takes place at night; you'll notice dark hues used throughout the levels. The music is also appropriately scary, featuring remixes of the classic movie theme. If you're a fan of the Nightmare on Elm Street film series, then you'll love this adaptation. This retro video game will make you feel like you're actually on Elm Street, helping the characters destroy Freddy. Even gamers who aren't fans of the movies will love the action found in this title.

Bad in such a good way.

Rating this game is a very difficult thing, sort of like rating a cult B-movie, or the Maury show. Is this game GOOD? Anyone who recognizes the rainbow logo of LJN knows the answer to that. (No), but it's not good in such a fun way. The baffling enemy choices (frankenstein monster-esque zombies? in a Freddy game?) to the confusing "Where do I go?" navigation, it's plentiful flaws make for a great game night with friends with some drinks. So I would definitely reccomend this game, if only for a particular kind of person. The kind that enjoys a hilariously bad game as much as they enjoy a hilariously bad horror flic. Do you like Freddy's Dead? Then maybe you'll like this!

  • Be careful what you "fish" for...

I was thrown off by the pic, so I went under the impression and not the actual description. I was so looking forward to trying the handheld device I saw, but instantly researched my mistake when it came. Other than that, this is a good horror collectible that has made me cautious in future purchases like I tried to be, as this was the only one, for some reason, I ignored the description. I love being able to build my collection all over again as I was a poor kid who could never really afford to build my collection in the past. However, I only plan on collecting the games I found truly worth playing back in the day and not every title out there. I love the games, not the rarity.

  • A decent sideways-platformer with a horror focus.

Not a fantastic game mechanics-wise, but a good example of licensed games in the era this was released. LJN had a habit of grabbing every license going in the 90's, and Nightmare on Elm Street was one of them. With 4 player co-op, this game is unique for the era, joining a few other sports games in the category, but this one sets itself apart for being a sideways action-platformer, albeit a relatively generic action-platformer.

  • Great Classic Game!

A Nightmare on Elm Street for the NES is a classic game that is just down right fun to play. It is one of only a handful of FOUR player games that was released for the original Nintendo Entertainment System. This game sucks you right in from the beginning and if you are a true gamer, you will play straight through to the end; that is if you can make it. If you have the Nintendo Four Score adaptor, you, and up to three of your friends can experience a night of fun battling Freddy and making it through your worst dreams. I give this game a 9.5 out of 10.
