I first became aware of the late Holling Clancy Holling in the early 1950's when my parents began giving me his books—Tree in the Trail (my personal favorite), Minn of the Mississippi, and the ever-popular Paddle-to-the-Sea. Of all the things of my childhood, only these books remain. My personal copies are well worn and have been read many times. I read them to my children before they could read them themselves. As a child I colored the monochrome drawings. I still page through these books from time to time. I am positive it was Holling's books that gave me my life-long interest in Native Americans, their culture and values. The stories are about children and have great appeal to children. Aside from Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House on the Prairie series, I can think of no other children's author who comes close to providing as much information and entertainment (Harry Potter go home!). Holling and his wife did thorough and accurate research—the stories are factual, informative and superbly illustrated (something you see little of in current children's books). They are timeless and have as much appeal today as when they were written. You could not ask for better books for home school use. Born in Jackson County, Michigan, in 1900, Holling Clancy Holling graduated from the Art Institute of Chicago in 1923. He then worked in a taxidermy department of the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago and spent time working in anthropology under Dr. Ralph Linton. During this period, he married Lucille Webster and within a year of their marriage accepted a position as art instructor on the first University World Cruise, sponsored by New York University. For many years, Holling C. Holling dedicated much of his time and interest to making books for children. Much of the material he used was known to him first hand, and his wife, Lucille, worked with him on many of the illustrations.Read full review
Resurrecting a childhood delight. I recall it was fun being read to a chapter at a time, with the wonderful, compelling illustrations. It's a great opportunity to read to grandchildren now.

This book gives a story as well as facts about Native American life. The tree is central to the book and gives it perspective from a different point of view.
