The rubber backing keeps the pad from sliding around. I wasn't sure what to expect from the top side -- the drumming side -- but it has great bounce and absorption, making it a pretty good simulation of the real thing. I use this pad to practice Taiko drumming (for sideways drumming, prop up a pillow on a chair and set the pad against the pillow). A great way to practice when you don't want to make noise, or if you are traveling, etc.
