With the advent of DCC and so many new types of DCC ready locomotives hitting the market these days, now is a great time to be into N scale model railroading. But what about all those perfectly good "older" non DCC ready locomotives you have just sitting on the siding? Well good news for the more adventurous "tinkerers" out there. The Digitrax DZ123 decoder is what the doctor ordered when it comes to getting those older locos back out onto the track. I've found the DZ123 will fit into just about any older N scale non-dcc locomotive out there. Sure its going to take some tinkering, filing, and just plain creativity sometimes to get the dz123 to fit into some frames, but unless you want to pay a fortune to replace your "roundhouse queens" with a new fleet of DCC ready units, this is your best option. Yes there are other manufacturers out there that make micro decoders like the DZ123, but most are darned near as expensive a new locomotive! Like all Digitrax decoders the DZ123 is NMRA compliant and super easy to program either with a Digitrax contriller or with a computer and JMRIs DecoderPro program. Another great feature about the DZ123 is the Digitrax "no questions asked" warranty. "Oopses" can occasionally happen, especially when custom fitting a decoder. Digitrax will replace the dead decoder within the terms of their warranty. All in all you just cant go wrong with the DZ123. I've got a dozen of these decoders installed inside my older locomotives and they perform the same as my newer "decoder ready" units.Read full review

I have installed about 3 or 4 of these in my locomotives. They are an excellent choice for a no frills Dcc decoder. I accidentally pulled a wire lose from one of the decoder and digitrax replaced it at no cost. I sent it in for warranty repair and they just sent me a brand new one. Exellent product and excellent warranty.

excellent low speed controller for small locomotives. the 3 step speed profile alows a long gradual acceleration particularly accurate for geared locomotives. a speed profile for a shay would be around 3-9-25. this puts most of the speed at the top end. I mount the sound only system elsewhere, a structure or car since most of my layouts are modular & small it works because it is hard to tell where the sound is coming from. locomotives too small to have sound are chuffing away merrily. it's not perfect but generally believable. consist the sound & add the locomotive, this gives control over whistle & bell to the address.

These decoders are just the ticket for small wheelbase locos where tender space is limited or non existent. The ten pack is great as you always have that decoder on hand when you need it.

I am converting older Kato N scale units. Milling the frame the decoder fits great, Kato runs good but the decoder makes them better runners. Same for LIfe Like older units.
