If you're a John Deere tractor and historic American company aficionado, this is a great book for you. At 800 plus pages it is very comprehensive and gives in depth information about how John Deere and his company, which set up shop in 1837, survived and thrived through a Civil War, Great Depression, two World Wars and stiff competition from many other companies like International Harvester, Case, Caterpillar, Ford, and many more. You will also learn about those competitors and what their strengths and weaknesses were compared with Deere. I was not as interested in the fine financial details such as stocks, etc. But some readers might appreciate those facts. The numerous Appendices give a wealth of information tracking how the company grew over the years. The book was written in 1985, so the more recent company history is lacking. That was fine with me, as my area of interest is the very early years. It is a long read, but is chock full of interesting facts. I highly recommend it!Read full review
