Pinion size matters
This starter is an 8T version. The OEM starter is 9T. The specifics as to why the change I cannot say. The lesser-toothed version is easier to spin, the engine turns at a slower speed. Maybe there were problems with the current required to run the 9T starters. I have seen multi-function switch (on the steering column) problems more than once due to current draw on the starter contacts in the switch. Mine was over 30 years old with 200K on the clock but that time and miles included wiring around the on-column switch contacts that were melting into the phenolic base. Point is, be aware of the tooth count change. The new starter sounds labored, but that is only due to the speed at which it is turning, not a loading or starter problem. Over years of starting my rig, I have become used to the amount of time the starter needs to be engaged to start the engine. The first start attempt with this new starter, I let off the 'start' switch before the engine caught. Again, that due to the slower engine crank speed. This starter appears to be a well put-together unit. Off-vehicle tests showed the solenoid to be strong and the motor energized with a good kick. Only time will tell if it works as it should. No reason to think it will not. Fit to my '89 1.6l 8V was perfect. Zero problems with fit-n-finish. I'll get used to the different sound eventually.
