Listen Up with 10-inch Single Port Car Speaker Enclosures

Do you love listening to music as you drive? The quality of the music is significantly impacted by the speakers, subwoofer, and the enclosure in which the two operate.

What is the function of the speaker and subwoofer enclosures?

The speaker and subwoofer system enclosure is a box-like device in which the speaker and all their electric parts are put inside. The device prevents the audio waves from the back side of the speaker to interact with audio waves in the front part of the speaker because the two sound waves distort each other when they come in contact. The enclosure also manages the vibration produced by the driver frame, the moving airmass produced, and the heat generated by the audio components.

Where does the enclosure fit in the car?

Different fitment models are available. They may be placed in areas such as:

  • Trunk cab
  • Trunk
  • Under the seat
  • Universal
What are some different types of speaker boxes?

You can choose between:

  • Sealed: The back of the speaker is completely covered up. The air generated inside the enclosure generates the movements of the cone. Used for a deeper base of audio.
  • Ported/Bass reflex: The front part of the box has a hole for equalizing of the pressure between the air inside and outside of it.
  • Band-pass: Used for louder sound within a particular frequency range. The woofer is placed inside a dual-chambered box, which makes the sound extra loud. There is an increase in the bass.
What materials make up the single-port enclosure?

A single-port is a device that has one hole in the case for a single speaker/subwoofer, unlike the dual port box that can house two of these. The box can be made out of wood, polyester powder coated cast aluminum, or reinforced fiberglass material. Both of these materials have the capacity of redirecting sound waves from their surface.

How do you choose the right speaker box size?

To know if you have the right box for your car speakers, consider the size of your subwoofer as it is the most important element that determines the speaker size as they produce most of the air inside. The size of the woofer in inches determines the volume of the speaker box you are going to use. The volume in cubic feet is found by multiplying the width, height, and depth of your box and dividing the value by 12. The following subwoofer sizes correspond to the following speaker box volume:

  • 4 inches: 0.25 cubic feet - 0.39 cubic feet
  • 6 inches: 0.35 cubic feet - 0.54 cubic feet
  • 8 inches: 0.54 cubic feet - 0.96 cubic feet
  • 10 inches: 0.96 cubic feet - 1.8 cubic feet
  • 12 inches: 1.8 cubic feet - 3.5 cubic inches
