Took it on a trip to Orlando and it worked great.. I was very impressed with performance... I especially like the easy access mute button on the plug... Im giving it 4 stars instead of 5 due to the fact I feel the volume control is a little "wonky".. You have to hold it and then release it when the volume has reached desired level.. Why not just make it a simple 1 press low... 4 presses high ?

This is a sensitive radar detector with a significant flaw. While the radar bands are highly sensitive, the laser detector generates numerous false alarms. Having used it now for about two weeks, I have had at least six false alarms (locations where there are no laser devices). I am considering cancelling the laser detection mode and taking that chance. Otherwise this is a very good detector for the price.

This Radar detector has saved me many tickets in this last month. I do speed a lot like 10 -15 mph over the posted limit & this Radar detector had warned me of a lot of sitting & hiding County Sheriffs taking KA & K band radar. I wouldn't drive with out this bad boy...Very Dependable & Very far range picking up all radars. :)

Good long range especially when set to "highway" only used it once on a 1250 mile trip and still learning the different type of beeps. As long as radar is being continuously used by highway patrol it will detect. If you are being pulse you better react quickly if your driving on interstate where cars in front are being radar you stand a good chance of not being caught.

Have and use two Escort 8500X50 detectors regularly, and was curious if a newer model would be any better or worse. Purchased the S55 at a great price on eBay. I installed both models side by side on the windshield of my sedan. Actually looking forward to encountering a police car with a radar, I set out on a 3 hour drive. I quickly noticed the S55 does not pick up any X frequencies, those commonly sent out by store motion detectors to operate doors. The first Ka signal was actually picked up a split second by the S55 before it was received by the older 8500X50. The volume takes a bit of time to get used to though. Have to hold down the volume button for a second or two to adjust the volume up or down. And it does provide a visual reference on the signal strength scale to help you see the volume level as well. The S55 comes with a nice travel case that holds the receiver, windshield mount and smart cord.Read full review
