Don't miss the opportunity to read The Mitford Series books by Jan Karon. This is an excellent book. The author continues to excel in taking the reader to Mitford, a wonderful journey to an imaginary small town, but a time and place we all yearn for. I love the ongoing development of the characters as well as introduction of new characters...all colorful, common, everyday people with real life experiences and their interaction with one another for the good of all. Community life at it's best. Everyone should go to Mitford!
I bought this book to complete my set of 5 Mitford series books by Jan Karon. Even though I haven't started it yet, I know I will love it because I read the last one first, not knowing how great they are, then wanted to complete the set. At first the style was hard to get used to, but I'm glad I kept reading. These books are eye-opening - you see and feel the burden of being a priest or pastor, in his job and as a person in a diverse community. This priest has such a heart for the people! Even though my pastors aren't called priests and my protestant denomination doesn't do things just like this one, the experiences ring true. God bless Ms. Karon for her work!
I bought the first book at a store that had used books included in their things for sale. While reading the book I was hooked and looking at the first pages, realized they were a series. I went to a used book store and accidently but happily found only two of Jan Karon's books, one was the one that I was reading at the time and the other happened to be book two which I purchased very quickly. After doing research and learning how much it was going to cost to purchase the rest of the series from the published, I happened to remember purchasing some books a couple years before from e-bay, so I went to the website and found all of the rest of the series. I love reading these books because not only do they are so well written that you actually feel like you are right there in Mitford while you are reading them. I also like the references to the bible through out the books. Some years ago I collected the Grace Livingston Hill books and still have them. Occasionally I run across one of her books that I do not have which is few and far between since I have most of them. They are really good but Jan Karon's books transport you to the site/scene you are reading about so very well. I loaned one to a friend of mine and she just let me know that she had read the first chapter of book one and clearly understood why I loved them so well.Read full review
I'm hooked on anything Jan Karon writes. She's an outstanding Christian author. These High, Green Hills is one of her best books. It makes you feel good to read it! You'll fall in love with the main characters Father Tim and his wonderful wife. They struggle and celebrate life each day just as you wish you would do on a more regular basis. The book is inspirational and endearing and heart warming. Don't miss it!
I stumbled across the first book in this series (titled At Home In Mitford)at a yard sale and bought it only because it was in trade paperback format. I make a habit of purchasing those when I find them. Am I ever glad that I did. I enjoy reading novels where I do not have to wade through excessive violence and sexual activity to follow the story. And even though I am not a regular church attendee, I found it refreshing to read about people who constructed their lives around doing what was right, even though they often did not find this the easy thing to do. I have since managed to locate the remainder of the nine book series, and have loved every one of them. I therefore not only recommend this book. I recommend them all.
