These recordings of radio programs bring back wonderful memories of yesteryear for a 65 year old person like myself, who, as a child, grew up in a household where my mother always had the radio tuned in to one station or another. I have listened to only one program in the Sherlock Holmes series thus far, and have a few observations: 1. There seems to be some kind of static which occurs occasionally in the recording. It's not all the time, and may not occur in all recordings, but it detracted slightly from the listening experience. It would be good if, in future editions of this series, the static might be electronically minimized. 2. These radio programs had only a minimal amount of time in which to convey their story line, and so, the dialogue often proceeded at a fairly rapid pace. I think it would be helpful to listeners (especially elderly listeners, or people who may wish to listen to the programs while performing some other activiy) if, in future editions of this series, the speed of the recording were slowed down just a trifle. I think that such a trick would have minimal effect in the sound of the characters' voices, while substantially improving the comprehension and enjoyment of the programs.Read full review
I love the old radio shows and for awhile there was a radio station that played them at night. No longer. I don't have enough time to concentrate to a book on tape. This is perfect. Each CD has two episodes. What I dislike the most is the constant advertising for Petri wine. One positive thing happened though. I heard their name so often in the neverending commercials (so much so that Dr. Watson acknowledges that the host seems to have a one-track mind) that I decided to look up the company. Learned something about the early beginnings of wine-making in California.
Thoroughly enjoyable. Although not the true A. Canon Doyle stories, these adventures are based upon the original Doyle adventures. As a lifelong Sherlock Holmes fan I can now listen to these classic adventures in the car. Basil Rathbone remains one of the great actors to play the role. The period commercials, i.e. Petri Wine, add to the ambiance of the old radio broadcast. This was a great buy and a bargain!
I am a mystery fan and saw this advertised as a "deal of the day". It was $6.oo which i believe included free shipping. You get 26 CD's with 2 episodes on each CD of 1940's radio show of sherlock holmes. Actors are Nigel Bruce and Basil Rathbone. The commercials are fun to listen if a little bit tedious.... What ever happened to Petrie wine? I'm half way through the series and there has only been 2 scratchy recordings. I'm not sure I would want to listen to the stories over and over but its a perfect thing to listen to and pass on to the next armchair slueth.
This CD collection truly is the Best of Sherlock Holmes. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle would be proud. Basil Rathbone IS Sherlock Holmes. Nigel Bruce brings Dr. Watson to life like no motion picture ever did. The key to the whole experience is one’s own “theatre of the mind”. Everyone of the programs is so well written and produced, the listen is taken right to Baker Street, and goes right along side of Holmes and Watson, experiences every thrilling moment of the story. The collection is hard to find, so the next time you see it on ebay, BUY IT!
