This is a terrific, detailed analysis of women's clothing of the whole 19th century in England! I'm part of the Living History group in Old Sacramento, CA and this book is very useful for designing clothing appropriate to 1849-1860. Most of the other fashion books of mid 19th century only cover the Civil War period. The English and American fashions of the period are similar since most of the fashions of the day originated in Paris and London.
I purchased this book because I run a website dedicated to fashion accessories (specifically, opera-length gloves) and I found the book during a recent research trip to the Library of Congress. I was so impressed by the breadth of the text and the quality of the illustrations (both original and prepared for the volume) that I decided to add the book to my own library. The fact that it was published by Dover is another plus, because Dover Publications is the leading publisher in the field of historical fashion and costume.
The book is a wonderful source of historical reference.
