Family saga that follows four friends and brothers through the tumultuous 60's in Italy, taking you along through the decades, leading to the millennium. I first viewed this film at the Seattle International Film Festival and loved it! Great characters. Rich relationships. All wrapped in this lovely, sentimental score. Glad to finally have my own copy!

I think there are two kinds of people in the world: those who have seen "The Best of Youth," and those who, hopefully, will see it soon. I have been a film buff for 50 years, and this is the best movie I have seen in my entire life. Period. (My twentysomething daughter loves it just as much as I do.) It tells the story of an Italian family through almost four decades, but with a few changes in details it could be about any family anywhere at any time. The themes - love, loss, finding one's place in the world, the importance of family in all our lives - are timeless and know no geographic boundaries. The acting by the large ensemble cast is superb. You really come to CARE about these people. The cinematography is exquisite. Buy it, buy it, buy it! Never mind the 1-5 scale, there ought to be a special "10" award for this movie.Read full review

The lives of two brothers, their family and their friends are portrayed over a period of 37 years. The brothers share a profound sense of morality--a rare thing in Italian society. The story begins when Matteo, who is volunteering at a mental institution, kidnaps a patient to save her from the doctors who mistreat her with the use of electric shock therapy. Nicola, the brother who is an aspiring physician, accompanies Matteo in an attempt to locate a suitable place for the young girl. Their efforts are in vain, and the girl is captured by police. This eisode begins the decades long decline of Matteo's own mental health, as he sinks into a depression and begins to alienate himself from his own family. Nicola goes off to explore the world while Matteo joins the army. Both brothers meet up again while helping the flood victims in Florence in 1966. Nicola falls in love with a communist agitator who later leaves him to pursue a life in the resistance while he raises their daughter on his own. As my husband and I watched the movie, we made many predictions and thought that the movie would live up to them; however, it only proved to be unpredictable. The only thing that was truly predictable was that the family would some how be involved in every major historical event in recent Italian history--which of course, in real life seems preposterous. Having my own affections for this country of full of passion and corruption, I found it quite interesting to watch each event unfold and weave its way into the lives of these brothers. It's a piece of historical fiction that I recommend to anyone who can sit through six hours of subtitles--so far, there seems to be few of my friends who are interested!Read full review
I originally saw this film in the theatres in two installments, each lasting 3 hours, and having to leave the theatre after the first installment was absolutely torturous after having been absorbed into this beautiful, lush film. With panoramic views of urban and rural Italy, the country serves as a backdrop to the economic, political and personal journeys that one family (representing the whole, I imagine) lives through. Sweeping through years of turmoil, of love, of joy, and of suffering, we see one family through many generations learn to survive and carry on. Impeccably acted and scripted, this film was largely overlooked on an international scale (possibly due to its 6 hour running time), but is, as far as I'm concerned, one of the greatest cinematic masterpieces in existence.
