This was selected by my book club. It is the story of 3 generations of American Indian women, in the present day. Different than many books you read today - not a love story or a mystery, more about personal relationships. Wasn't crazy about it at first - a little slow moving, but the last part of the book was its saving grace. Some of the details were extraneous to the story so it could easily have been shortened. Lent it to a friend, who wanted to give up halfway, but she was glad I convinced her to finish it.
It tells the story of three generations of women. A daughter, mother, and grandmother. Part one starts the story of the daughter who is blended with an African American father and a Native American mother. Part two is the story of the mother, a Native American woman growing up on the reservation in the shadow of her younger brother who was beloved by the mother and the entire reservation. The thrid part follows the grandmother. A Native American single mother on a reservation. Tough as nails she is and even though finds herself the talk of the reservation as being such, she could care less of what anyone else thought. All the hardships, trials and tribulations and all the wonderful joys of being a woman and a mother. I first read this book in college 10 years ago as recommended by my professor. And I truly enjoyed it back then so I decided that I wanted my own copy and wanted to read it again!Read full review
