A beautiful book inside and out, this should be the starting point for any New York area hiker or walker, or anyone who wants to get out and give it a try. It provides a broad overview of the regions, the hikes available in each, transportation, conditions and ownership, and highlights, natural and man-made. This book will help you discover the great places nearby and further away, and it will take many afternoons and weekends to try all the suggestions. The book begins with geology and provides a solid footing for experiencing the landscapes in terms of their place in the world. It continues with histories, up through the present including stories of the lands' protection. Wonderful pen drawings or etchings, some dating from the earliest editions of the book ninety years ago but also some more recent, grace the pages and attract the hiker's interest to great views and features. The back of the book features color maps that help the reader understand the locations of the hikes in context. These are not hiking maps, and are no substitute for the NY/NJ Trail Conference maps of each area that are offered separately, but the book covers so much that the maps are a great way to figure out where you want to go for a particular trip, or which way this mountain range or that river head from where you are. This book doesn't include New Jersey (See the New Jersey Walk Book) but the authors have to draw the line somewhere to balance the virtue of completeness against that of lighter pack weight. New Yorkers are lucky to have this book and all the other information available through the force of their numbers; and given the pressures of industry and development, lucky that there are so many good places to hike and be outdoors.Read full review
