A very useful book for all but the most experienced gardeners, who probably already know this. The book provides overviews and recommendations for selecting varieties, planting, and growing a wide range of plants. My personal interest is vegetable gardening, and my only complaint about the book (and why it didn't earn a fifth star) was that it provides too limited a range of options for recommended varieties. The ones the author recommends are ones that most gardeners will have success with, although there are others that may be better. Still, I'm sure I will refer to it often in making purchases of flowers and perennials. Its "be aware!" section is extremely helpful, especially for the beginner and intermediate gardener. I know of no other source that addresses the issue of recommended (and non-recommended) varieties across a variety of plant types (vegetables, annuals, pereennials, herbs, turf grass) so directly, and for that the author provides a real service. A good regional vegetable gardening book (like Timber Press' new series "Vegetable Gardening in [Southeast, etc.]" may provide more detail on recommended vegetable varieties for specific growing regions.Read full review
