This is the fourth book of James Kochalka's that I have read (along with American Elf, Quit Your Job & Fantastic Butterflies, in that order), and I must recommend it for its clean, quirky lit'ry style and its wonderful illustrations. The book covers a series of vignettes in which Jeremy, the crow, bosses around and manipulates Peanut Butter, a dutiful little cat who thinks she works in an office (each story finds Peanut Butter working on someone else's financial records; she takes coffee breaks, (attempts to) mail business letters, etc.). I love James Kochalka's style-- the writing, the drawing, the whole package-- and I would recommend Peanut Butter & Jeremy to the general public. In fact, PB&JBBE is devoid of the R-rated language that is found in much of his other work, which makes it much more suitable for the whole family. HOWEVER, for the sensitive parent looking for something different, Jeremy doesn't present the reader with many examples of good behavior (he is rude, impatient, sarcastic, and at one point actually points a loaded GUN at Peanut Butter's head (everything turns out well in the end, but not everyone is ready for gun play, so be aware). All of that aside, the drawings are wonderful, the stories are funny, and the pages go by quickly. In a nutshell, this book is best summed up by my father who, after reading it on a car trip, said, "I really liked that book, but I kept wanting Peanut Butter to eat Jeremy or something." If you like Kochalka's other stuff, you'll enjoy this as well. If you're after something fairly safe for your younger reader, this might be a step in the right direction.Read full review
