I bought this snare-side head for my main Pearl Export snare drum, because I had read the ads promoting its dark and warm tone. Well, my personal experience states otherwise, and here's why. When I first put it on, I was shocked by just how LOUD my snare drum had become with the new head. On that first night of playing it and just trying it out, I went to bed with both ears ringing as if I had shot my .30-06 rifle about 10 times in a row without suitable ear protection! Also, the snare wires vibrated like crazy with each hit (although mine are the Pearl S-041 cable/gut-style snares), despite I had them tightened up quite a bit. I've also discovered a discrepancy that's associated specifically with my particular head. At about the 10:00 position of the Remo logo, with the logo right-side up, I noticed that the head is further up (about 1/8-inch higher) from the rim to the bearing edge bend than everywhere else on the head - IF that makes any sense to y'all! This caused an uneven tuning issue, and it could very well be the sole reason why I just couldn't get this snare-side head to sound the way I wanted it to. However, due to the very thin 3mil thickness of the head, using it would still make the volume far too loud for my snare tastes. I'm sticking with Remo's Hazy Emperor snare-side, which is 5mil thick and provides that darker old-fashioned sound I prefer. The 5mil Hazy Emperor makes my snare sound bigger and deeper than it actually is (mine's only 5.5-X-14"). If any of you insist on buying this head anyway, just remember to plug your ears somehow while playing it in a smaller room without all that much dampening available. Luckily, my drums room has a good-sized rug on the floor, but it's still loud enough all the same! This concludes my review of this product.Read full review
