as i told tinarose (vendor), i literally fell off my chair when i happened to run across the name 'betty wright'...i grew up in southern calif in the 50-70's and always liked womem r&b singers like bw, aretha, chaka khan, roberta flack, phoebe snow, patti austin, dusty springfield, etc...this particular cd (which is a rhino release) has 'cleanup woman' and other songs which demonstrate bw's true talent...she had that sweet as honey, behind the beat & in the pocket way of syncopated phrasing that, along with some strong but minimal rhythm guitar chunky funk, really made for an infectious groove which was much more funky than disco (disco was straight four on the floor boom boom boom boom)...you can get bored with disco, but not with these infectios tunes (you discover new phrasings all the time listening to the bw's voice mix it up with guitar & percussion)...all i can say is that you'll be impressed with betty wright...it's too bad she has not gotten more recognition...i love her soulfulnessRead full review
