I still can not believe that this book is written by crazy Steve Martin, but it is a great book. The shop girl of the title works selling gloves at an upscale department store in L.A. when she meets an older rich man who gives her the attention she craves in her very lonely life. She has no close friends and her family is in a different state and she has one casual boyfriend who is too poor to pay for even burgers or a movie and she just barely gets by herself. The older man pays off her student loan, buys her a new car, clothes, takes her to expensive restaurants and cares for her. The story does not end like you think it will, but then nothing in real life ever does. Definitely worth reading before you see the movie.
page turner from the very beginning. The story brings you full circle on the love life of Maribella. I won't give you details. Be as I was before i read this book - blind to all reviews on it. I happen to stumble upon this novella when my friend and I were re-arranging the community library in our workplace. I'm so glad it crossed my path. exquisite in all it's simplicity - who knew Steve Martin had it in him to pour out such wonderful writings. Cozy up, and read Shopgirl. you won't be disappointed. *SIDE NOTE* i just finish watching the movie. ugggh... horrible. you will destroy the purity of the book by watching the movie. what a big fat disappointment. :(
As a fan of Steve Martin, I was a little surprised to find I enjoyed this novella so much. I saw the movie first and then ended up buying two editions of the book. Steve also wrote the screenplay for the movie so it does ring quite true with the book with exceptions here and there. The book itself doesn't contain a lot of dialog amongst the characters themselves but it's still a great read. Seeing the movie first, I had no dialog, story line or events to compare it to and I preferred it that way. There are moments in the movie where a character is obviously in private thought and the book just gives you that little "aha" moment, making you privy to the details.
I have not read this book yet, but I'm giving it an excellent because the movie was amazing and the book is always ten times better.
