It appears that I have a different edition of this book to review than the one shown in the stock photo. Mine is ISBN # 1-85170-173-7, dated 1991. It is hardcover with dustjacket, and 320 pages long, illustrated in color. Considering that this book was originally published as a 6 volume set between 1876 and 1888, it's not surprising that it has been reprinted numerous times; it is an invaluable reference that continues to inspire fashion enthusiasts of today. The book gives an outstanding overview of all facets of costume and dress, starting with the ancient world and working its way up to the 1880's. Accessories are shown in addition to the costumes; for example, where warriors are shown, so are weapons and sheilds. An effort was made to show costume and dress from around the world, including Native American, Middle Eastern, Asian, Egyptian, African, European, Etc. The information in the book is beautifully organized and presented. The fashion illustrations are outstanding and interesting, sure to spark your imagination. This book also does not overload on text. If you are more interested in pretty pictures than you are in heavy reading, you'll appreciate it. I have heard quite a bit of criticism of this book in terms of its historical accuracy. If accuracy is critical to you then this title might not be the best choice for your needs and you should probably look elsewhere, or at least find some other references to look at in addition to this one. If you decide to bid on this book on ebay, please be sure of what you are bidding on. You will usually find at least some auctions for single plates that have been cut out of this title (usually an older edition of it). These plates are lovely to own, but if you want the ENTIRE book, please make sure that is what you are bidding on!Read full review
