About this product

Product Information

Garnering a vast amount of attention from young people and parents, Smashed became a media sensation in the US and New York Times bestseller. Eye-opening and utterly gripping, Koren's story is that of thousands of girls like her who are not alcoholics - yet - but who routinely use booze as a shortcut to courage. Smashed is a sober look at how Zailckas drank from the age of 14 to some horrific results (stomach pumping, memory loss etc), what it took for her to realise she had to stop drinking and it is ultimately a literary debut destined to become a classic.

  • Great book!

Smashed: A Story of a Drunken Girlhood is a memoir about a woman named Koren who becomes an alcoholic at a very young age. She spends most of her time drinking and crawling deeper and deeper into depression. Thankfully she ends up realizing that this addiction is not supportive, and stops it right before it’s too late. I think that any teenager should be required to read this book because it is coming from someone first-hand struggling with this alcoholic dependence. Koren seems emotionally distant from some of the situations she has experienced, but the liquor can be a large reasoning for that. I really enjoyed this book, but it seems to drag out in some areas. I chose this book to read for my first literature circle because I honestly hate alcohol, it makes me sick even thinking about ...

  • well written memoir, but ultimately not a good read

Koren Zailckas' memoir is definitely an interesting read. It's very well-written, and I stopped more than once to admire a few descriptive sentences or paragraphs. Unlike some of the other reveiwers, I do not believe she "denies" her "alcoholism" at all. Horribly abusing alcohol is not necessarily proof of alcoholism. One can be addicted physically and psychologically and still not be an "alcoholic". And, even when one is no longer physically addicted, but still may be psychologically addicted, it doesn't mean they are an "alcoholic". It means they have a compulsion they need to learn how to control. It doesn't necessarily always follow that everyone needs to admit powerlessness and be in endless recovery and has a disease. Although the disease model is accepted by the AMA and other ...

  • Smashed: Good Read for Young Adults

This book is geared more for the teen-age / college aged individual in the vein of 'Sarah T: Portrait of a Teenage Alcoholic'. I found the continual bad decisions hackneyed midway through the book, and all became down right boring by the end. I thought this book would be more like 'A Million Little Pieces' or 'Dry', which were both good reads. For young folks entering the transitional years, this book offers a good illustration of how easily having a good time and unwinding can turn quite problematic.

  • excellent

This is a great book about teenage drinking. I think that every parent who has a teenage child should read this book, so the can identify signs of alcoholism in their children. It should be a book that children should read in school and maybe they will refuse to drink.

  • Good read!

Until I read this book I didn't know there was a difference between alcoholism and alcohol addiction. I totally believe there is. I'm really surprised the author, Koren lived to tell her story.
