About this product

Product Information

David Halberstam's masterpiece, the defining history of the making of the Vietnam tragedy, with a new Foreword by Senator John McCain. "A rich, entertaining, and profound reading experience."- The New York Times Using portraits of America's flawed policy makers and accounts of the forces that drove them, The Best and the Brightest reckons magnificently with the most important abiding question of our country's recent history- Why did America become mired in Vietnam, and why did we lose? As the definitive single-volume answer to that question, this enthralling book has never been superseded. It is an American classic. Praise for The Best and the Brightest "The most comprehensive saga of how America became involved in Vietnam. . . . It is also the Iliad of the American empire and the Odyssey of this nation's search for its idealistic soul. The Best and the Brightest is almost like watching an Alfred Hitchcock thriller." - The Boston Globe "Deeply moving . . . We cannot help but feel the compelling power of this narrative. . . . Dramatic and tragic, a chain of events overwhelming in their force, a distant war embodying illusions and myths, terror and violence, confusions and courage, blindness, pride, and arrogance." - LosAngelesTimes "A fascinating tale of folly and self-deception . . . An absorbing, detailed, and devastatingly caustic tale of Washington in the days of the Caesars." - The Washington Post Book World "Seductively readable . . . It is a staggeringly ambitious undertaking that is fully matched by Halberstam's performance. . . . This is in all ways an admirable and necessary book." - Newsweek "A story every American should read." - St. Louis Post-Dispatch

"For anyone who aspires to a position of national leadership, no matter the circumstances of his or her birth, this book should be mandatory reading. And anyone who feels a need, as a confused former prisoner of war once felt the need, for insights into how a great and good nation can lose a war and see its worthy purposes and principles destroyed by self-delusion can do no better than to read and reread David Halberstam's The Best and the Brightest." --from the Foreword by Senator John McCain "The most comprehensive saga of how America became involved in Vietnam. . . . • Insight into how and why we got into Vietnam

This book provides the details behind the Pentagon Papers. The author's interviews with key players and subsequent analysis provides a view of how we got into Vietnam and is nothing short of shocking. If this Information would have been available to the public in 1965, there wouldn't have been a Vietnam war and the loss of 54 thousand American lives and hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese. My view of the war was changed forever.

  • The scam of Viet Nam

younger generations need to read this before buying into conflicts that dont realy involve. Our American treasure is our people and our young were wasted due to political games

  • Accurate title, the Best and Brightest, is tongue in cheek

A great copy, delivered on time. A great history of American politics and foreign policy in the 40s-60s. Eventhough Halberstam is left of center, he's my favorite historian.

  • A sad but true story of liberal politicians sadly thinking they could win the Vietnam war.

A complete account of the forces which came together to create the Vietnam war fiasco and mismanaging that war and causing the demise of over 58,000 American casualties in Vietnam.
