Melanie, aka Melanie Safka, is a great, charismatic singer/songwriter. Her music draws on Pop and Folk traditions for the most part; but she is eclectic. She has had a long musical career. Melanie started recording in the late 1960's- but her heyday was the Seventies. Although there are other fine Melanie collections; this is the best Melanie compilation I've come across so far. What makes it special is that it includes the hard to find BITTER BAD - the original single recording which was a Pop hit in 1973- and which was not released on any of Melanie's regular LPs. I love Melanie's husky, but unmistakably feminine voice on this one. The melody is beautiful, the lyrics moving and amusing at the same time. Melanie's voice is strong, but characteristically vulnerable here; and very affecting. If someone were to attack Melanie, and by extension, her music: he might charge her with being too strident, dramatic, even histrionic; and on other hand too cute, vulnerable, and naive. Guilty as charged, say I. In fact all of these qualities are part of what make Melanie and her music charming, adorable... almost irresistible at times. She can be be childlike and sweet; or intense and dramatic; and when she lets loose: she positively wails! In spite of the serious tone of much of her work, her songs often contain a substantial measure of humor, whether obvious or subtle. She can also be quite earthy. The bottom line, though, is that Melanie is simply a great singer who writes and sings many excellent songs. Most of her best are on this collection. Not exhaustive; but a very entertaining and satisfying collection nonetheless. I love Melanie and her music !Read full review
I liked and first heard her songs in the 70's. They remind me of a time when Uncle Sam did not look after us very well. How sad. And there are some good pop songs too.

This was the first album that influenced my singing and songwriting. My mom bought it, and I claimed it as my own- I was 12 years old. I would listen to it all day, sometimes playing along with a plastic recorder. It was the deepest and most poetic music I had yet heard at that time. Something about her simultaneous delicacy and flamboyance just grabbed me. I owned my original copy for about ten years, then I lost it in a move. The copy I ordered from this seller was in perfect condition, and I popped it into the CD player right away... awesome! "For sometimes when I am feeling as big as the land With the velvet hill in the small of my back And my hands are playing the sand And my feet are swimming in all of the waters All of the rivers are givers to the ocean According to plan, according to man Well sometimes when I am feeling so grand And I become the world And the world becomes a man And my song becomes a part of the river I cry out to keep me just the way I am According to plan" -Melanie SafkaRead full review
What a beautiful CD, have been listening to it a lot. Some of the songs you can tell are written about The 60's. Would recommend.

My husband came home one day talking about Melanie. I did not know who she was until he said she sang the song " Brand New Key" . He stated he liked her music. So, I thought I would surprise him with a CD. Ordered it. It came in no time. HE LOVES IT. Makes me happy when he is happy. We have been married 36 years..
